Apparently after 10 more 'legitimate' posts I can have an avatar if I want one. Moreover what is an 'illegitimate' post. Answers on a postcard pls.

Just a thought, Sparkplugz:
Have you given that avatar a 'G' rating on Gravatar?
[Wordpress uses a rating system based on US film classifications. 'G' ('General') is their equivalent of our 'U' ('Universal') rating]

I know that AB's server only accepts 'G-rated' avatars from Gravatar but perhaps that restriction isn't applied to profiles (which would explain why your avatar is appearing in your profile but not elsewhere on the site).

lol! checked everything suggested. Lost the will. I've got my 'I'm gonna bleeding well fix this' head on now which is not good so will leave it in the hands of providence. Thanks !

Yes, should be okay by Thursday. Avatars linked to Wordpress and the same email account you use for AB do appear on the AB profile straight away but not on posts until the 10 posts and over 14 days have been met.
