Did he really seriously think that this duplicity was never going to come to light?
Even now, Trump is convinced that arguing that campaign funds were not used to buy the silence of an adult film star is the way to get out of this mess.
The source of the funds is not what America will want to know about - the reason that he felt the need to pay her off, is.
He is now spouting some guff that famous people routinely pay off people to buy their silence, it is a regular occurrence for people with money and / or fame.
Does it not occur to him that if he didn't consort with adult film stars, there would be no need to pay them off?
Also, while we are wondering about the workings of his mind - does he not see a difference between being a film or pop star, or a businessman, and being the elected President Of The United States?
Commentators are saying this might be the rope that hangs his presidency - and it's difficult to argue with that conclusion.

It is easy to argue with that. What he did in his private life, years ago before he became POTUS is not going to bring him down. It is a private matter, and being shown as a sleazy scumbag may hamper his next election campaign, but it is not a resignation issue.
Much more worrying for Trump is the Mueller probe, and whether Russia interfered in the 2016 election campaign with the intent of not getting Clinton elected. That noose is daily getting tighter and tighter.

After Obama won the Presidency, Trump campaigned for year as party of the Birther movement, claiming that Obama was in fact not born in the U.S.
So, Trump supporters need to be very careful in saying that the Democrats are sore losers, because its a charge that can be thrown at the current encumbant.
By the way - just as Clinton was investigated over whether he lied to the American people, the same should hold true for Trump, surely?
Just a thought - perhaps his philandering is why Melania always seems so repulsed by him?

And the same for Hillary?
Lets face it there are a large number of politicians 'at it' in one way or another be it mistrsses, that dress, badger hunting ot washing machone salesmen. If it does not affect their day to day work then what really is the problem. If you remember Paddy Pantsdown his popularity went up after admitting an affair.
You are coorect in that attack against Obama but I dont recall such a frenzied attack by left wing media, luvvie types and the opposition ever. It has been relentless yet still nothing.

When Obama was in charge, he was instead the subject of a frenzied attack by the right-wing media, was all. It did get rather vicious -- I think it's not difficult to find Fox programs making it sound like Obama was the harbinger of the apocalypse.
I agree that Trump's been attacked a lot too. On the other hand, rather a lot of these attacks seem justified.

If Politicians are good at their jobs, does it really matter what their private sex lives is like. President Trump is not the only one 'playing' around.
I'm pretty sure World leaders, and others in power are having affairs, pre-marital or otherwise. As long as the security of their Country is not being put at risk I don't have a problem.
“He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone.”

That rather misses the point.
No doubt many leaders have enjoyed the occasional dalliance, but what's at issue here is the question over how far Trump went to cover it up. Did he use campaign funds to (indirectly) buy Stormy's silence, for example? If so, then such payments could violate laws related to disclosure of campaign expenditure.
If it had ended with Trump bedding a porn star, then for sure no-one would care, and it would probably end there -- although even then, it really shouldn't. Don't we deserve a better class of leader than that?
