A tracking number says my Royal Mail Tracked 48 parcel should be here today, but the postman had just been.

Does that mean the tracker is wrong, or do parcels like this get delivered by other staff?

Perhaps, like the postie in my area, Letters are delivered first and later in the day he/she returns with parcels.

When you tracked the parcel, was there an indication that it was 'Out for Delivery' ?

Hans.
a little red po van usually lurks on the corner of my lane waiting for me to nip out

its the same here, same postie delivers small stuff and bigger stuff. He will often say to me that he has a parcel for me on the van and wioll be back
Small tracked packages addressed to me are routed via our local delivery office (under half a mile from my house) and get delivered by the regular postie at around lunchtime.

Larger packages are routed via a delivery office about 11 miles away and get delivered by a postie in a van, usually mid-afternoon.
