How to get rid of fresh paint on carpet?

White spirits will thin the paint and cause it to soak even deeper into the pile of the carpet. If it's gloss, let it dry thoroughly then use sandpaper - very gently - on the affected area. If it's emulsion, warm soapy water and a sponge ought to do the trick.
