Mr Alba has been thinking of getting a new/replacement mobile for a while now.
Have had a look on Amazon (other sites are available) and have seen some very reasonably priced ones.
However, they are sim free.
I have 2 questions:
Can he just simply take him sim card out of old phone and pop it in new one?
What is the difference between android and smart please - if there is a difference that is ?
android is an operating system the phone uses and smart simply means its a smart phone so you can use it to access the web and other features, not just a phone/text service
With sim free, usually you can do that but depending on the old phone, the sims differ in sizes and he may need to contact your provider to get a new sim sent out in the right size. (they usually come tri-part now so you can select the size you need)
Any phone that can connect to the internet/make & receive calls/take photos or videos is generally referred to as a smart phone.
Android is the name of the operating system the particular phone could use.
An iphone uses the operating system developed by Apple. Generally the applications used on these phones are designed to use on one or the other, but rarely both, though I'm sure there are the exceptions.
You can get a sim card adaptor at any phone shop if the sim is a different size.
As above most phones run on operating systems which are either Apple (if it's an iphone)or Android (most other phones).
An android phone (like a Samsung Galaxy J3) will do everything an iphone can do, except sting you for hundreds of pounds (oh, and if you're a dopey teenager, it won't impress your dopey friends, either).
He was happy enough making and receiving text/phone calls.
However, he now feels the need to be able to photograph his time sheet and email that, amongst other things.
Will have to make sure he doesn't drop it when he's up scaffolding!!
As you can tell, I ain't got a clue about technology :D
Thank you all for your help and information and advice. Much appreciated xx
Spath, from the OP . . . Have had a look on Amazon (other sites are available) and have seen some very reasonably priced ones.

I have called a halt to any further technology. I am quite happy with my Nokia non-smart phone for texting. I am avoiding Twitter and the like, and I don't feel useless without them.
Three of us bought new sim free 'phones outright about 2-2½ years ago from John Lewis when they had a promotion on, shopped around for good Sim only deals, I used to pay £30+ per month for a 'phone, now pay £10 which covers my needs, and the capital outlay is dropping every month, us pensioners have to be careful you know ;o)
