What did you wear for your wedding?

My first wedding dress was bought for me by my future mother in law....she'd never had but always wanted a daughter so I was the next best thing....for a while anyway.

She marched me into an upmarket shop.....announced that there was no budget and bought me a beautiful dress....simple but beautiful. I still have it...size 10....but it seems to have shrunk over the years..... :-(
The second was a soft, pale green sleeveless number......flowed smoothly over the slim hips and ended just below the knee....
The wedding itself was a day of disasters and much laughter...but the frock was nice....size 12.......though it too seems to have shrunk.... :-(

If I ever remarry it will be when large flowing kaftans are in fashion...... :-)

My mother married in a black pin striped suit.....with a bump hiding bouquet......and I remember my sister wearing the suit in the 70s and looking the height of fashion.....x

First time a cotton broderie anglaise trimmed dress with clusters of rosebuds, floppy hat and posy of pink silk roses I was 22 and size 16. I made it into cushion covers and the lace trimmed a set of tablelinen. Second time hand embroidered hand made faux raw silk, dress in ivory with a white organza hooded coat with a train. Three moon tiara and lime orchids, cream rose and Crystal bouquet. Size 24 but a smile I didn't have the first time around. Shortened to wear as an evening tunic.

Rowan...those sound beautiful...and so you....I love raw silk.... :-)

I feel I ought to do something with my first one....I may....

My bouquet for the second arrived....arranged in a vase..... :-)
I got married in September. A quiet do, so I didn't want a big flouncy dress. Mine was knee length ivory silky with cap sleeves and trimmed with lace. I felt just right in it.

That sounds lovely, Jo....it's how you feel that makes you shine on the day, isn't it...x
The first one...1972 in church...was mid calf length in an ivory colour. Square neck, 3/4 sleeves. Trimmed in peasant style with embroidered ribbon around neck, sleeves, and on an apron effect panel at the front. A flower garland in my hair.
The second...1982 at register office...was teal blue/green patterned silk. Knee length, scoop neck, fitted waist...fuchsia pink strappy heels. I still have the dress...haven't looked at it in years.
A white swiss cotton wedding dress lined with white cotton, bell sleeves from tight cap tops, high waist with a sage green velvet ribbon sash, matching sage green ribbon and fresh flowers covered my hairslide and I had sage green ribbon on my nosegay style bouquet. I designed it and my mother made it, middle Sis did my hair and big Sis did my flowers, grown by my father. The cake, made by my sister had the same sage green velvet ribbon on it and a posy in a silver vase which matched my flowers. my bridesmaid niece who was 7 weeks old had a dress that was a miniature of mine and a posy in a tiny cane basket. My Mum made the dress and the basket. Still got the dress and the cake stuff. I sent my bouquet to my DH's maternal grandmother who was too disabled to be there and my niece now in her 40's still has her dress and the silver bangle we gave her as a bridesmaid gift.

Pasta..those colours for your second sound fantastic!

Woof....that was lovely to read....special memories and how nice that your niece still has that dress..x
The first was cream tulle with lace sleeves, decollete and frill round the bottom plus quite a long train, a pearl encrusted Tudor headdress with a full veil. Very dated on reflection. 4 years ago got married on the beach in a Phase Eight bridal cream long flowy number.
Question Author
Prudie....was having the ceremony on the beach everything you wanted?
My second was in the communal garden of the judge who married us...but it meant so much more to me than the big Latin/English first wedding....it was more me...x
Well yes in that it was the best husband :-) It wasn't quite perfect as 10 minutes before the start it rained and the flower covered arch stood lonely on the sand as we had to move the ceremony into the hotel lounge area but it stopped quickly enough to go back out for the photos (liquid sunshine they call it in the Caribbean!!)
Question Author
Mmm....there are husbands and husbands, Prudie.... :-)

We only took two witnesses to our little ceremony....and crazy woman accidentally joined us... strangely the same thing happened to MrsO! We shared photos of our crazy wedding guests...

I have posted before that the communal garden was full of girls sunbathing topless so my photos are all of MrG and the other guy looking sideways with silly grins... :-)

I shall follow this with interest seeing as I REALLY need to find an appropriate dress soon. At present the clever money is on me in my jeans with my hair in a scrunchy...........
ogh how times change
my gt niece didnt like the one her mother bought for her and bought another ....
and then gave the fella the boot !

we have yet to see either production
Barmaid, wait for the January sales, then hit the shops.

I bought my dress in the January sale, 1978. It cost £15.00 and it was beautiful. I still have it and it just about fits, if I breathe in.
I was married in an empire line dress in white crepe with a lace bodice and three quarter lace sleeves. It had a short train that fell from the bodice at the back. I also had a voluminous, long veil. Strangely enough, only the other day, I was looking for something in the wardrobe where I keep the wedding album and I sat looking at it for a while. It brought back some good memories.
Tilly, you spendthrift! I spent £3 10s in Richards for a lacy mini dress with those bell shaped sleeves beloved of the late 60s, I also had flowers in my hair, as per San Francisco, lost a bit in translation in Farnworth!
Inflation, Zebo.
I made my own wedding dress (1971) with broderie anglaise fabric from Liberty's - the fabric cost £20 which seemed extortionate!
Question Author
Start a hire shop, Peter.... ;-)

I'll bling up the jeans if you want, BM.....!

Empire lines are always classy, Milo....I can imagine yours with the train from the back of the bodice...just lovely...x

And yours, Zebo! Of course the bell shaped sleeves....I loved those...and flowers in the hair...wonderful wherever...San Fransisco or Farnworth...... :-)
