I think this modern trend for being overly physical is something we Brits have not taken to easily - it offends our inbuilt sense of decorum, as well as invading our scrupulously monitored personal space.
I am of the belief that you greet someone in a manner which you know they will be comfortable with - and if you are not sure, then a simple 'Hello … ' and a smile is fine.
If you read body language, you can usually tell if someone is moving in to hug and / or kiss you, so simply step back, smile, and hold out your hand.
That puts you out of reach, and sends the clear message that you don't wish to hug or be kissed by someone you are not engaged to!

mallyh - // i'm a very touchy person … //
That's exactly the defence Dave Lee Travis used in his sexual harassment court case!
What you have to bare in mind is, just because you are a 'touchy person', it doesn't follow that everyone else is, nor that they will be equally as enamoured with your physical interaction as you assume them to be.
The assumption is the difficult bit - it shows a lack of empathy for others, and it also indicates a lack of respect for the feelings of others.
As I have said, read the body language, assess the situation, and never assume that everyone is up for a hug and / or a kiss.

Just get used to it...stop moaning, it's no big deal.
I am tactile and am proud of it........heterosexual that is......I would n't kiss a bloke ;-)
In the UK, we kiss on one cheek, the continentals kiss on both cheeks and the Dutch kiss on both cheeks and then a third kiss on the original cheek.
