I seem to remember when I first joined, there were no avatars. Your screen name was next to whatever you'd posted/replied. If you were a new member, your name would appear on the site in green letters for a few weeks, then change to black. Who remembers a user called Diesel? Caused absolute ructions on here. Happy days!

Could have been, Ken but I don't remember it quite like that!
and other names ..
And, going along with the thread "What Words Have Crept Into The English...". Whats wrong with the the term "pictures"?

Just typed 'dieseldick' into the search engine and he comes up as user inactive - last post in 2017. Think he came from Ireland - can't remember whether it was north or south of the backstop:-) I do however recall him being quite rude to me when i first began posting. Soon learned to give as good as i got though.

I agree, sanmac. Avatar is one of thse words too! I don't think anyone had heard of it till the film of the same name. Well, only geeky, nerdy types probably.
The way we use the word today is quite new but the word Avatar has History in its original meaning in Hinduism.

Hinduism
the manifestation of a deity, notably Vishnu, in human, superhuman, or animal form

Word origin of 'avatar'
C18: from Sanskrit avatāra a going down, from avatarati he descends, from ava down + tarati he passes over

Thanks Mama, but that's it for me! I'm off to bed. Don't want anything to do with any religion! See ya!
Well, I guess I'm a disbeliever because I don't think that anyone on this site is a manifestation of a deity...Thank God.
Lots of words have traversed to a different use from their original meaning and been adopted into mainstream language.

Night 10C.
