Saw a letter in the paper the other day about this, signed by a load of ne'er-do-wells. MP's, Bishops and so on.
Load of toss, i thought, but it made sense when I read the content.
We use the blades of kitchen knives to cut, chop, carve stuff. Apart from the odd pickled onion I've never stabbed anything in there.
You are much more likely to die by being stabbed than slashed.
Not read any answers - but mine in an unequivocal 'NO'. We're in fantasy-land here. Kitchen knives need to be very sharp and pointed otherwise you cant perform a lot of actions. Becoming more than tired of having my freedoms (e.g. to use a sharp, pointed knife) threatened because of a minority.
Also, it makes it easier to cut things if the point of the knife is small, as it allows the knife to pass through what you're cutting with minimal friction.
I know dedicated stabbers can get other pointy implements. But it could be a start and deter the more casual ones. Youngsters who nick their mum's kitchen knives.
Some might be ok with blunt ends but not boning and filleting knives....also I have got serrated tomato knives with a completely rounded end that are lethal....like razorblades.
I cut with the cutting surface of the blade. When I fillet my mackerel (tonight) it does help to have a point to insert into the belly when feeling for the back bone. The only other time I use the tip is cutting out the eyes of spuds.

I've just used one to cut open an Amazon package, though scissors might have done as well. Do big knives need points, though? I would have thought filleting fish etc would be best done with small knive;, I wonder if there's any need for those Crocodile Dundee things?
