Rubiks Problems!

So, I can solve a standard 3x3 rc.. my sons friend gave me a twisted rubiks to try, but had dropped it and a few of the centre middle pieces he come off. I solved it using the same algorithm as before, and then put the coloured pieces in where needed.. I gave it back.. and he did it agin

Well.. did I say something wrong? No I can’t solve the 4x4 I can solve a 2x2 though.. im not an expert, just learnt to help my childminded kids solve their various cubes...!! And now I know there are lots of different types!! no worries though if you can’t help... google couldn’t either!!! :-)

Oh... hahah!!! It’s cut off half of my post!!! It went on to say I solved the puzzle but had to swop some pieces round (as I knew some had come off, but didn’t know which ones!) so it’s in a solved state, gets jumbled, managed to solve except for one edge piece.. is this because it was taken apart and not in original state although it looked as though but was? And how would you know how to put it back together so it was solvable! Sorry.. I even proof read my op..

Whatwhat, I’ve got a book that gives the solutions. I’ll have a look later and see if there is one for //one edge piece// wrong.

(As an aside, my sister used to take the stickers off and put them back on to get the finished cube. For ages we thought she was very clever, but - strangely! - she could never solve it in front of anyone.)

Thanks cleverjo.. I promise I can solve ;-) think it will say it’s not possible, but I just don’t understand the thing enough to know how it can be solved, jumbled and then become unsolvable?!?!

There are 2 ways to construct the pieces. One way allows you to solve the puzzle afterwards, the other is unsolvable. Unless wanting to wind someone up, best to put it together in it's solved arrangement.

My grandson can now do it in seconds having followed algorithm on youtube. I have one by my side which I use as a worry bead but have only ever solved one face. By the way what is an algorithm? I never did find out what logarithms were all about despite an O level in maths.

An algorithm is a set of steps to follow in order to solve a problem or a process.

If you have a puzzle, let's call specific moves A,B and C. If it looks a certain way, you may need to do A,B and C to make it look another particular way.

If it is slightly different, you may need to do A,A,B,C to get it to look the way you want.
