no retro, I am familiar with MJ, I saw this on the news the other day and there was a close up. It's a grid, bit like GO but the pieces are thick coin shaped with some sort of inscription on them possible made from bone/ivory originally probably plastic now.

When my son was in Vietnam he took photos of some men playing this game .

My original idea was Mah Jong - but it didn't quite gel. Latest news says the poor 39 in the lorry were probably Vietnamese, so that ties in with andres' answer.

You can download chinese chess from play store.
I downloaded a version some time ago, but it doesn't seem to have English instructions.
