Faulty Central Heating Programmer

Had a new CH pump fitted (old one was smoking and was near to causing a fire) and now the programmer doesn’t seem to want to work with the boiler.

When I switch the pump on (which also switches on the programmer) the boiler starts up immediately and I can’t tell whether the boiler is providing heat for the water or heating (or neither which is worrying).

Plumber, who isn’t good on the electrical side by his own admission, says when the pump went, it may have caused the programmers circuit board to blow but I can still set all the times, the boiler just does it’s own thing unless I press advance for CH or water.

Any ideas, anyone?

Hi Zacs,

Although it is entirely possible for the circuit board to fail, it does rather sound like a plumber clutching at straws.

Much more likely, is that he hasn't wired it up properly.
Being able to adjust timings should not be affected.

Combi boiler, or airing cupboard with cylinder?

Our heating played up at the end of last year - it totally ignored the control panel.

It was permanently on.

Turned out it was a faulty electric valve (think thats what it was called) - the box in the cupboard.

By the way, the pump has 3 speed settings.

Ok, no one can say for certain from here. I do think that since the old pump was seizing up, and was replaced, then there is no logical reason for the programmer or anything else to come out in sympathy.

Anyway, if you like, have a Google for the new pump's wiring diagram. (Maybe the plumber has left it with you.)

Knowing you, I reckon you could check the wiring yourself.
If not, then either an electrician, of a proper boiler guy.

I think we may be at cross purposes here. Zacs.
Boiler to spur... that would be the mains power supply to the boiler. Not necessarily the connection to the programmer.

I would just trace where the wires from the pump go, and check that against the diagram.
