Trouble With Epson Printer

Evening all
I have an Epson expression XP4100 all in one printer. Everything has been fine, photo printing, scanning,copying etc., until a few days ago when I tried to print some pictures. I constantly get a message telling there is no paper inserted whatever size of photo paper I'm using ( plain paper is fine ). I've tried reloading the paper, using varying brands but without success. I mainly use HP paper and after contacting Epson support they tell me I must use Epson paper. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Apologies for the lengthy details.

Have you tried the turning off power, leaving for a minute, then turning on again.

sorry, can't help but i use all sorts of brands of photo paper in my epson printer without a problem

I don't know your printer, so please can you tell me the difference between printing photos and other documents eg, do you have the paper in a different feeder? Do you feed the paper manually into a slot rather than have the paper in a tray? Do you have only the one sheet of paper in the tray rather than a stack of paper?

my printer is an ancient epson where you feed the paper into a slot at the back

ael - if your printer is the same model as fbg's I can't think of a reason for the problem.

Thanks for all the answers folks. To answer BHG, prints onto ordinary paper fine. Paper is fed into the rear of the printer in a bundle as opposed to one sheet at a time. My last printer was an Epson and never had any trouble. Unfortunately my PC is away at the "menders" at the moment ( back on Monday), so am going to try and uninstall the printer and then reinstall when my PC comes back. Thanks again for the advice.

Is there any way of feeding a single sheet? I guess photo paper is slightly thicker/stiffer than ordinary paper, so maybe the printer feed is struggling with it. Can you get to the paper-path enough to clean it?

I could try a single sheet but have no PC at the moment but will certainly try when I can . Had part of the back off yesterday and gave everything a clean. Thanks for the suggestion.

The XP4100 requires the user to tell it what type of paper is in the feeder. See 'Select Paper Type' in the handbook/instructions. Did you select the correct paper type?

In response to your suggestion, I have always set the size/type of paper via Printer Preferences when the dialogue box appears. I have done it this way for several printing "sessions" with this printer and have never had any trouble until recently. I checked the "instructions" provided and it clearly states that the preferences can be set via the PC under printer preferences. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just for info folks, did a complete UNINSTALL of the printer yesterday and then RE-INSTALLED. Printer now seems to be ok ! Thanks for all the advice
