It would need to be a mobile on the Virgin network to test it. Or even a sim free phone will tell you if the sim is okay. We're you to test it in a modern phone you may need to start altering the size of the sim.
..Your phone is approx 14 years old, have you not considered updating?
A phone is not is not meant to be kept for life, it would be beneficial to have a more recent model. You probably wouldn't have issues with sim cards for a start. It's a bit like wanting to keep windows XP.. you know you shouldn't but you like it!
