My laptop has decided that it doesn't want to boot up when I switch on in the morning. All I get is a flashing screen. If I force a shutdown by holding the power button down and then switch on again it boots up. Checked all the drivers and they are up to date as are windows updates. I don't want to have to keep shutting down using the power button, any ideas?

thanks for your input Chris, tried the startup repair fix but it couldn't find a fault, giving the message "Start Repair couldn't repair your PC" message because there's nothing that needs fixing

Had the same problem a few months ago. Chris tried his best with a couple of suggestions but sadly ended up having an SSD to replace the old HD that was on it's way out. Cost £160 all in. Glad I had it done - boots like a rocket now !! Good luck

thanks fbg40 but i'm loathe to spending £160 on a year old lappy :-)

As Fbg40 effectively suggests, it might be worth checking your hard drive for errors.

Go to 'This PC'.
Right-click on your C drive.
Select 'Properties'.
Click the 'Tools' tab.
Under 'Error checking', click on 'Check'.

(I agree about the joys of having an SSD though. I'm typing this on my new laptop, where the SSD makes everything zoom along!)

thanks, hard drive check shows no probs, i'll just have to 'double boot' in the mornings . . .
It may be worth you turning off fast boot in the bios to see if that works
Fast boot works by saving the operating system state to a hibernation file and calling on it to boot the system when you start up again so it could be you have a device driver from that cache that is creating a problem with booting
With fast boot turned off, when you start the pc it loads the original drivers
A false start or by pushing reset you skip the fast boot cache and load everything from scratch.

thanks Bertram, i disabled fast startup yesterday to no avail. For reasons which are total mystery to me, my laptop booted up first time this morning without a problem! isn't technology wonderful :-)

It might be due to antivirus. Try disabling the antivirus and then perform a reboot and check if it works. You may also try to restore Windows to the previous working point.
Connect the power cable AC adapter, if your laptop is running on battery power only, connecting the AC adapter may solve the problem. Ensure the adapter cord is correctly plugged in on both ends securely. If the laptop works with the adapter plugged in, your battery is dead or defective.
Remove and reconnect the battery, many new laptops (especially MacBooks) are using the new design that does not allow their batteries to be removed. If your laptop does not have a removable battery, skip to the next section.

The laptop can also be in a power state that prevents it from booting. Disconnect the power cable and then remove the battery from the laptop. Leave both disconnected from the laptop for at least a minute. Then, put the battery back in the laptop, connect the power cable, and try turning on the laptop.
