Goodmans is Comet's own brand, probably a badged product from a far east company.

Two good DVD makes are Sony and Toshiba.

Saw a Sony DVD player in Sainsbury's this morning for 50.00. No idea how good it is.

We had the exact same problem with a goodman's and bought a pacific from Asda and have had absolutely no problems so far plays anything Mp3's,cd's and Dvd's really good value for 24.99.
I bought a Yakumo off Amazon for around thirty quid, was ok for a few months then packed up. Got a replacement and that packed up. Sent it back and got a Sony DVP-NS30 from Amazon for under fifty quid and it's amazing. The sound quality is unreal, especially now I run it through my stereo. Can't fault the picture and features either. Would recommend it highly.
Try ones from aria.co.uk or novatech.co.uk. The very best at a reasonable price is made by Toshiba (see What Hi-Fi mag or website). However, DVD recorders are coming down in price so you might want to wait for one (or just buy the cheapest player you can just now, seen one in the paper for 19.99 !!!)
There's a CyberHome CH-DVD400 Multi Region Capable DVD on Amazon for 19.99 and the customer reviews for it seem to be good too.
