Flickering lights

Does anyone know how the flickering effect on lightbulbs work? They're usually the candle replacement ones in chandeliers. Thanks, Emma

For the gas to light up it has to ionize . But first it has to heat up hot enough for the atoms to breakdown into ions. The flickering is caused by the current taking different paths through the gas , or alternatively variations in the heating of the gas , which change its resistance.
