Anyone here used Economy 7?

Have just moved to new place that has electric storage heaters with Economy 7. I know it works on the basis that it stores heat during the night and outputs it in the day. Thing is, if we're not in during the day, how do we go about setting it so that the heat starts at about 5 ish and stays on until midnight? As yet, have been unable to find a timer, just 2 switches on the heaters that are labelled 'Output' and 'Input'. Can anyone help - purleeease? Thanks!

You will either have two electricity meters or one with a button at the top which cycles round (normally) 4 tariffs and a couple of test screens. Daytime rate is usually tariff 1 and e7 tariff 2, 3 & 4 aren't normally used for domestic. Your economy 7 storage heaters are supplied by a radio controlled clock which comes on at midnight and off 7 hours later. The heat that goes into the storage heaters will normally last until well into the next evening. If they have been switched off for a while it may take a couple of days or so to get them up to full heat. The input control regulates the amount of heat that is put in during the night and the output control opens a small flap inside the top of the heater to let the heat out again. Once you get used to them they're quite good. If you live in Scotland you will find that the TCTH system works differently.

My advice whiskygalore....get rid of it and fit gas if available. We had economy 7. Problem is the British weather!! You set the storage rate and find that the following day is warmer than expected so you end up with the heating on and the windows open. Get gas if u can!!

We benefit from Economy 7, despite having gas central heating. We use timers to switch on our washing machine, tumble dryer, dish washer and electric immersion heater ' all power-hungry beasts ' overnight, when all the electricity in our home is at the cheaper rate.
