Perhaps it's easist to illustrate the method with an example. Start by choosing the number 12345.
The 'messed up' combination number I now choose will be 54321
Taking the smaller number away from the larger, i get 41976.
Let's say I hide the 9 in that last number: I have 4176. Adding these four numbers up, I get 4+1+7+6=18. Call this answer (a)
Now using the information I gave at the very start of my answer, we note the multiples of 9: 9, 18, 27, 36, etc. What we now need to find is the number that we can add to our answer (a), in order to get the next highest multiple of 9. The next highest multiple is 27, so 27-(a) = 27-18 = 9
Hence our chosen number is 9! Magic!
