Yes - I'm surprised phones are allowed in class at (some) schools. Having said that classroom disruption was quite common at my grammar school in the 50s/60s stemming probably from a teacher failing to interest the class & failing to keep order. Baiting of some of the teachers was cruel sometimes.

Williamson is correct. They are distracting and can certainly lead to mental problems, if not illness. A friend of mine discovered her son was falling asleep in school. Investigations found that he was waking up during the night to take part in Facebook and Twitter dialogue. He was 13.

There is no reason for a pupil to have a mobile in the classroom and there is little doubt that they are disruptive. The fact that they are "part of life" is hardly the point. Televisions are part of life but I would not expect pupils to be allowed to watch one whilst being taught.

I agree they should also be banned in the chamber of the House of Commons.

As I said before NJ, any school with anything already bans phones in class except where needed: and believe it if not they are actually used for work sometimes.
This is control freakery of an unhelpful nature: the fact head teachers aren’t rushing to support it should tell you everything you need to now about exactly the value of this

Your anecdote about a child using a mobile phone during the night is meaningless in a discussion about them being use in schools. That child should clearly have his phone taken away by his parents until he is more mature.
Saying phones cause mental health issues and are a distraction while still using yours is hypocritical. If you are taken in by Williamson’s bogus posturing then you would have to support mobile phones being banned in the workplace, at home and in public buildings.

Sunk, your post doesn't make a lot a sense. Phones can become an obsession - in fact they are for a lot of people, especially young people - and that's not healthy.
