ive never really noticed an issue when i just eat the fruit peeled in slices,

however, recently i blended up a kiwi in a smoothie & i couldnt drink it - it instantly burned & itched my throat terribly - it actually kind of hurt to swallow it - like it hurt on contact.
i threw it away and was fine.
I cant recall if i felt 'off-colour' or anything later on but i have a lot of health issues so symptoms could have been written off as one of them.

ive never had a swollen throat or mouth though.

i assumed it much be the seeds - most of which usually just get swallowed whole and only a few get chewed up.

just wondering what other ill affects people have had from it - and do you still eat kiwi minus the seeds?
do you eat the skins?

thanks :)

I tend to only by kiwi fruit in the chilled mixed (prepared) fruit bowls that all the big supermarket seem to sell. I've hardly ever bought them on their own.

I've never had any problems eating them but it's known that some people can display (usually mild) allergic reactions to eating them:

My cat had an extreme reaction after playing with one - never bought one since. It was the hairy external skin that seemed to be the problem.

yes i think i must have the oral allergy version, but just for the seeds.

i dont have kiwi that often, but i've had IBS for many years & im allergic to stuff like animal furs, feathers, mould etc, & i get bloating etc from bread - so its entirely possible they have made me feel unwell, but i didnt notice or make the connection.
i think i'll do some tests on myself! :D
I don't think the skins are to be eaten, I never have and looking at them, they remind me of the 'furry' side of plane tree leaves .....and I know the problems they cause ...so I think you're quite safe to use them, just skin them first.
I just cut them in half (around their waist - not lengthwise) and scoop the flesh out with a teaspoon...bit like eating a boiled egg.
proteins in kiwi fruit to allergic reactions, including actinidin, thaumatin-like protein, and kiwellin. Evidence also suggests that a compound called 30 kDa thiol-protease actinidin may be a major kiwi allergen. People with a kiwi allergy often have a hypersensitivity to other allergens.

clear really? - no I didnt write it
I get a sore tongue when I eat kiwifruit and pineapple.
Yes I am, the last one I had, made my throat itchy and sore and my face was very red and blotchy, never touched them since.
