I was told to leave my fridge standing for 3 hours before turning it on (but it had not been put on its back, said the delivery man). Unfortunately the internal switch was already on when I plugged in and didn't notice that. Is it likely that it is me who has caused the problem and could it go away if I turned it off for a few hours?

"Minimum setting" - can you clarify? One of my fridges has settings from 1 - 5 (1 being the warmest) ; the other has temperature settings from +2 to +8 (obvious here that +8 is the warmest).
I'd be tempted to switch it off for a few hours, then set the thermostat half-way, power it back on again and see what happens. Fridges work by evaporating a fluid and then re-condensing it and it might just have got itself in a knot. Powering it off for a while will give it chance to settle.
