Shortcuts On The Desktop

I have shortcuts on the desktop which I sort into type and then alphabetically.
Yesterday when I turned on my computer, the shortcut icons were all over the place and I painstakingly put them back in order.
Today the same thing had happened again and I don't know why.
As far as I know, I haven't changed any settings, so I don't know why this has happened.
Any ideas please? TIA

PC. How do I find out the operating system?
Question Author
Do you mean this?
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
To find your operating system and all specs go to settings.
Windows key or icon bottom left. Choose settings (cog wheeel) from pop up menu. In Settings choose System. In there choose "About".
You will find your os and all the desktop specifications. (Very Useful)

There have been one or two updates and tweeks in the last week or so, not least security patches and upgrades, probably in light of what is happening in Ukraine.

Shall I just blame the Russians then?

Thanks Mamya. Unfortunately the video clip just shows how to align the icons which I know how to do, but it doesn't say how to keep them like that.
It's never happened before, the icons have always stayed where I place them, but for some strange reason they have become all mixed up and spread out all over the desktop 2 days in a row.
I've arranged them back again and will just have to hope that I can find out how to keep them in that order before I switch off my computer tonight.
If they are all mixed up again tomorrow, I might just have to open the window and throw the pesky thing out!
Is there a 'Save' option after you have arranged them?
I'm probably repeating What GG has posted.

In the comments under the video.

'If your icons go back to where they were previously, then do this. Go into Settings - Personalization's - Themes- Desktop Icons Settings. If the box is checked " Allow themes to change desktop icons ", uncheck, hit apply. Hope this helps.'

Thanks GG and Mamya.
I found the thing that says 'Allow themes to change desktop icons' and I've unchecked it, apply and Ok, so hopefully that might do the trick.

You can arrange them by right clicking and choosing arrange by type, name, date etc :)
Hope so Barsel.
agree randy, no need for painstaking aything barsel - just right click on the desktop and choose arrange by type - it does them in type and alphabetically within that type
also when right-clicking it should say something like "align icons to grid" - when you say the icons are all over the place, if you mean all over the screen rather than just out of order, that should line them up.

You may find that you have to do it again after another update or patch. I has always been the case with all operating systems. Some settings will go back go back to the providers default.

Thanks for all your answers.
I did try right clicking and choosing to sort by type, but it didn't put them where I wanted them to be, so I still had to drag them.
