How do I remove this from varnished wood?

Seem to remember a 'trick' where you put a damp tea towel over the wax and run a warm (not hot) iron over it. The wax should stick to the towel.

Or... cover it with a piece of kitchen roll, warm GENTLY with a hairdrier, and press the kitchen roll into the wax

White spirit will remove it and will not harm the varnish.
