Have just started using a new Electric Kettle
how do I get rid of the funny taste to the water?

Is it a plastic kettle? If so, it will go after a few days.
Leave the lid open at night.

Every electric kettle that I've ever had has included instructions stating that you should fill it, and then let it boil, several times (simply discarding the hot water) before using it 'for real'. That usually clears most of the plastic taste but it can take a week or two before it vanishes altogether.

heat water up for your pans to steam veg etc....or whatever, then it will pass.
