why is it that after you have used a new videotape you can never tape over the first second or so of what you first taped?

You can, but you would have to manually rewind the tape completely back to the begining, this is not easy you need three hands to do it. When a tape player rewinds the tape it always stops just before the start of the tape to make sure that it does run to the end of the tape at speed and break it off.

With new video tapes, I always fast forward them briefly then rewind, it tends to alleviate the problem.

I use a video re winder. Rewinds back to the beginning every time.

If this is the case, then how come the player can rewind back far enough for it to be played back?
