How To Put Rawl Plugs & Screws Into The Wall Without A Drill??

Does anything exist - a gadget? A special type of screw or plug?
That will insert the rawl plug etc without the need for drilling?

I have a drill but I have carpal tunnel syndrome & the vibrations set it off really bad.

Any ideas?

Perhaps you can chisel a hole with a hard chisel, then cement the rawplug in place and let it all set.

 

Wouldn't advise it though.

I remember my father and grandfather using a lump hammer and round chisels to make anchor holes in brick walls. Before the days of hand drills of course. Ancient civilisations used to do the same and the early coal miners tunneled using this method. Hard work and liable to make your condition worse I would think joko.

You can get hardened nails to drive into brick walls,but my experience of them has often been unsatisfactory.

 

Google it for lots of examples, one shown below. Relatively cheap so you could experiment.

If using a drill is an issue, SDS won't be better. Hand chiselling may be a pain too.

They were the very thing Donny. They also came in length up to about 3ft for making holes for explosive charges etc. Used in quarries and slate mines as well. The price of those on ebay!! Ever likely my old man used to go spare if I didnt look after the "Jimmy Jewels".

You may also consider surgery for the carpal tunnel problem?    I had mine done years ago, and never a problem since.

I also remember that if the little wooden hollow "plugs" were not to hand, or only one fixing was being made, the old boys used to whittle a wooden dowel of wood and hammer that into the labouriously chiselled hole and they could get a screw fixing in that. Anyone remember these?

The wooden tube type ? Yes, may even have some at the bottom of a toolbox somewhere.

I think what  what donny and togo are referring to are what were known as 'star bits'. We used to use them before the days of re-chargeables, and when there was no mains power available.

Laborious job involving a lump hammer (club hammer). One whack then rotate the bit. Repeat ad nauseam.  No good for your carpals though.

There are nailguns that fire special nails into convrete etc. Also 'Hilti' guns that fire into concrete or even steel beams (very satisfying.)  No rawlplugs needed. Slight overkill though.

The short answer joko..............  is to ask someone to drill it for you 😮
