You've got your pocket money and you're in the sweet shop. What are you buying?

American hard gums, please, and a refresher chew

used to get 4 black jacks/fruit salads for a penny, also those flying saucers were 4 a penny. Those pink chewy shrimps were 2 a penny and a rock hard sherbet lolly. I'd spend it on those retro sweets.

10p mix with cola bottle, refreshers, fruit salad, black jacks, sherbet frisbee, aniseed balls.

McGowan's toffee, a penny chew, love hearts, opal fruits

Star bar

Still crave fruit salads and black jacks.  I liked the fruit salad hard gum sweets too.

My mom always had coconut mushrooms which she was very reluctant to share.

I used to spend my bus fare on penny sweets and walk to school

Question Author

What were those two for a penny mint chews (like black jacks in size and shape) called?

Question Author

I loved all toffee. My dentist didn't love me

Rainbow Drops.  Still buy them now and again.  Another favourite was Butterscotch Gums.

Question Author

Can't imagine butterscotch gums.

Love hearts were girls sweets, so were parma violets.

I didn't like Parma violets. Anyone remember Victory V losenges?

Question Author

You can still buy Victory V. I used to like them when I was out in the cold weather

Sherbet Fountain and a quarter of Sports Mixtures.  Also a Lion comic - it's a newsagent as well.

Question Author

Anyone remember the hard gum Scottie dogs, sold 4 for a penny?

I didn't like Parma Violets or Floral Gums.

Question Author

Those sport mixtures were far better than today's version. I used to buy them four for a penny, in a twist of greaseproof paper

I got a thru'penny bit on a Saturday and went to the sweet-shop.

I bought a bag of Walkers Smoky Bacon Crisps (2d) and 2x Black Jacks and 2x Mojos (2 for a ha'penny) (1d).

However, one dreadful Saturday morning I toddled along to find the crisps were now Tuppence-ha'penny meaning that I could only have 2 chewy sweets instead of 4.

The distress was real.......😭

Can you still buy a loose quarter of anything?

Was also keen on penny dainties and ha'penny caramels - it's amazing I have any teeth left!

brainiac 14:34  -  Yes there are still a few shops around where you can buy a quarter of your old favourites.  Love seeing a wee shop with big jars of sweets in the window and on shelves inside.

Nostalgia heaven for me 😁
