//The Slovak cabinet has approved a plan to shoot around a quarter of the country's brown bears, after a man was mauled to death while walking in a forest in Central Slovakia.

Prime Minister Robert Fico's populist-nationalist government announced after a cabinet meeting that 350 out of an estimated population of 1,300 brown bears would be culled, citing the danger to humans after a spate of attacks.

"We can't live in a country where people are afraid to go into the woods," the prime minister told reporters afterwards.//

This is just awful - and apart from that killing a proportion of them won't guarantee safety for human beings.

Typical politician, having to be seen doing something, however misguided and pointless.

It is awful if that's the sole reason.  We cull deer and badgers for other reasons.

I would hope there is more to the cull than just this one reason.

Unfortunately like in Alaska the bears no longer have the fear of humans and the humans are to blame for that.

they encrouch on bear land and think they should feed them and try to pet them!

If the bears have overbred then a cull is needed.

Seems harsh, as usual animals pay for human stupidity.

Rather a high number and as even that wont stop Bear attacks I suspect something else is  behind this.

That'll learn 'em.

Alternatively maybe they could stay out of bear territory ? Aren't they a protected species ?

They've been considering a cull for some years. Five people were attacked in the same town last year

Bear attacks seem to be a real problem.

I don't see how killing some of them will make any difference.

Killing some will reduce the population to a level which can be sustained with available prey without turning to humans.

20:55 oh so have they told the bears that? To a bear a person is just dinner me old china.

If bears won't stop killing humans, humans will have to kill them.

It's been going on for at least 40,000 years, - grow up !

brown bears would be culled, citing the danger to humans after a spate of un defended attacks.

god I thought this was a sideways sly comment for Ukraine or that other brown place....

which are being culled - disgusting disgusting - I shall spend my period of suspension  considering whether the equattion can be applied to war zones at any time

"bang bang you are all dead!" strikes me as beinng a rather un-useful boundary condition
