Cutting Down Shrubs

morning guys .... I have decided that I want to cut down our pyracantha bush and a pesky wisteria that just grows everywhere and gets in the way of our shed door (it was a stupid place to plant it in the first place really!).  Is there a good time or bad time to do this.  I want to cut both shrubs down altogether, not just prune it, i.e. right down to ground level.  The wisteria wasn't a great one for flowering anyway, so it won't be missed .... Hope someone can help, please.  Thanks

As you want rid of them I don't suppose it really matters when you cut them down.
Are you digging up the roots too?

Cut that stuff down to root level, it will grow back, poisoning the stump will help you eradicate the annoying plant.

Or move the shed.

Its a shame to cut the wisteria down I do think they are beautiful plants probably planted to mask the shed.

Ozzy is right, there is a high chance of them growing back if you don't get rid of the roots - but I don't suggest poison it can harm wildlife.

So what do you suggest ddil?

Depending on the size and age digging them out

Make sure there are no nesting birds please.

thanks for all your suggestions folks, much appreciated.  I just want to cut it down to ground level, and of course I realise that it will just grow back, but I'm not worried about that.  And I will definitely not be poisoning the stump!  We've got two wisterias in the back garden, the one we want rid of is the one which never really flowered all that well,so it won't be missed   - that much - and I'm tired of fighting my way through all the foliage to get to the shed... and no, we can't move the shed!    Thanks guys, it will probably have a stay of execution until the autumn though!  Apppreciate all your help!  Oh, and as for the pyracantha, it was probably a big mistake to plant it in the first place!  We hate pruning it as it's so prickly!

If you are happy for it to grow back - then you can cut it at any time tbh (I have) but as it grows this time - try training it with some hooks and string - you may actually find it flowers especially if you feed it.

Good luck

You can borrow my dog if you like. He's pruned the whole garden down to bare branches

As you are getting rid of it you can do it any time. To stop it growing back you need to dig the roots out as well. Remember the earth will be difficult to dig in mid summer because the earth will be dry and hard.
