Has anyone noticed that on quiz shows, reality TV, "talent" contests etc, all the people shout and scream a lot (including presenters) so that nobody can hear what they are saying whilst in drama programmes, the actors seem to whisper or mumble a lot, precisely when you need to hear them clearly?

Perhaps I am just getting old!

If you have problems hearing speech in dramas, check your TV settings.

Mine has 'clear speech' which softens background noises and enhances speech. It makes a big difference

Strictly and X Factor are the worst

One that bugs me is The 1% Club, the cheering is not the constants, always sounds the same, there is no audience! Then there's The Chase, again..no audience. There are loads of shows like this, trying to pep up the lack of excitement I suppose. Wonder who decides when to press the false audience button, they are easy pleased

I know what you mean. Shouting and screaming appears to be the in thing. It came over from the US.

It's a bit like putting sound effects and crappy music on the crime programmes which feature any number of obese American detectives bigging themselves up.

It's to try and make the very ordinary interesting.

I tend to put the subtitles on these days so I can turn the background noise down but still see what's being said. Also helps with the mumbling
