I bought an HP PSC 1410 all in one printer at the start of November 2005, since then i have need to replace the ink cartridge (black) after printing about 100 pages - the cartridges cost about 13 pounds so price per sheet of 12p! - I'm really annoyed and will need to but a new printer as this one is simply not up to the job i bought it for. There is no mention of this issue in printer literature or sales info. do you think i have any possibility of returning the product or have a simply bought a dud and need to try again and try and forget about the 70 quid i've wasted (not to mention all the bleeding ink i've used up)

It could be that the cartridge that was in when you got it was only part full. I get refills at Cartridge World and I was shown how little the makers fill them up, compared to the way they do it (to the top). Seems the makers often only put in a 'trial size' cartridge in new printers so you'll have to buy more quickly. Printers are so cheap now, they make more on the ink.

I recommend Cartridge World - full refills, and only about half the price of the maker's refills.

Your printer should get Approx 150pages out of 1 cartridge.

The problem with HP printers is the print head is on the cartridge (so you normally get very good quality because you repace head every time you change cartridge) so you very rarely get other manufactures making cartridges for them.

Most Epson printers have head on the printer and not the cartridge so you get other people making cartridges for them. the colour ones are rubbish and no good for photos but black is black... You can get compatable black ink for epson for less than �2 (Inkrite for example).

Buy an Epson.

You will have to talk to the shop or HP about retuning it.

Mine is an HP PSC 1215. I don't keep track of the cartridges I use, but they must last between 6 months and a year. There are cheaper ones at Tesco. It may be that, as snook says, you had a partly filled cartridge.

I believe the HP PSC 1410 All-In-One Printer uses the HP21 black cartridge which holds 5ml of ink.

A lot of other printers use cartridges with a capacity of 25-50ml.

I would always recommend Googling for reviews of printers etc. before purchase so that you can compare running costs etc.

The price of printers is 'subsidised' by the selling of 'consumables'. Printers are relatively cheap so they have to make up the difference with the high price of cartridges.
Also cartridges are actually a very sophisticated bit of kit.
Still a blinking rip off though! I get my HP copies from Tesco and refill them myself.

thanks all - guess i'll have to try filling them somehow, its not just the expense but the sheer bloody hassle - at the moment i'm doing a 100 pages every two weeks maybe, so it seems like as soon as i update the cartridge its telling me i'm running out again... i hark back to the good old days when you could just plug in a printer and away you went for ages and ages - just couldn't find a simple bog standard OLD printer anywhere, maybe second hand. I guess i'll keep this one for printing photo's (which i have done twice now so i'm sure its worth it!!!!!!!)

Buy a Black and White LASER printer.

They are MUCH cheaper per page than any ink jet printer.

You can get one for about 60 or 70 pounds

i have the same printer...and yes for some reason
it does use a lot of ink especially if you are printing
digital artwork images i think you where fortunate
to get 100 prints...warranty is usually 1 year
