Im pretty good with electrical stuff, but this is baffling me!...Any of you geniuses out there, please help!

As my old tv had an audio out connection at the back, I just plugged the Hi Fi speakers into that and everything, tv, video and dvd came out of the speakers.

My new tv only has audio in. The only thing that has audio out is my video and dvd. its ok when I wanna watch a video or dvd with bigger sound, but when I watch tv the sound only comes out of the tv speakers, for obvious reasons. Ive plugged them into the video but the sound will only come out of the speakers for the tv if the video is left on. Is there anyway I can connect my speakers to the video, so that I can hear the speakers without turning the video on??

Slightly confusing but,my current setup is this: -

Freeview box TV CONNECTION (scart lead) to back of Television (scart socket)

Freeview box AUX CONNECTION (scart lead) to back of video player (scart socket)

DVD Player (scart lead) to back of Television (scart socket)

Main external aeriel lead to freeview box (aeriel socket 1)

Another aeriel lead from freeview box (aeriel socket 2) to Video player

Another aeriel lead from video player to back of Television

What model of Freeview box do you have ? Mine has 2 phono audio outputs which I feed into my surround amplifier.

From what you have said I don't think you can listen to the TV via the video without having the video powered up.

You could break the audio out from the SCART lead - I've never seen a lead like this but have made a few up with a soldering iron.

You could use Scart switch box with audio connectors and use it to connect the Freeview box and the TV, but this would only help when watching Freeview. However, if you also connected the VCR and DVD to the Scart box you wouldn't need to switch the outputs for each source.

my freeview is the Sagem - doesnt have any audio sockets

someone did tell me a way of doing it, by swapping the leads around etc, but for the life of me I cant remember

The Scart connection carries sound, so you don't need audio sockets on your Freeview box. Get a 3 input Scart block with audio out (available pretty easily: some "Pound" shops, Dixons/Currys, Argos etc etc) such as http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5342361.htm - or you can get powered ones that auto-switch.

Connect your VCR to socket A, Freeview to B and DVD to C. Select "Record B to A" - it's unlikely that you can record your DVD output. Connect your speakers/amp to the audio out connectors on the right. (You can also select RGB handling if appropriate). If you want to watch/listen to your DVD, select C; if you want your VCR select A (also worth using if you are watching Freeview and editing out the ads "live"); if you just want your Freeview select B.

I found certain boxes didn't work with my Samsung NTL box, though the manual model shown seems OK. Even if it doesn't work, if you get it from Argos you can take it back in the guarantee period!
