I was wondering if anyone knew what method of production was used to mass produce modern posters. I know that lithography used to be the method used for mass production but am not sure whether the process is now computerised and large laser printers are used. Any info gratefully received.

I think some may be produced by the photogravure process. This is cheaper than the litho method and works by forcing the paper against the printing cylinder to produce the print. The result is not as crisp and clean as litho or letterpress printing, but from the distance posters are viewed this does not matter.

Many large catalogues and advertising sheets from supermarkets are printed this way. You can see the lower print quality and the paper used is thin and cheap looking as it does not need to very long.

stick the word 'last' into last line to make more sense - printer's error!
Small runs now often use Giclee digital printing especially small posters /art stuff as opposed to advertising billboards
