An aftercooler is often fitted to diesel engines which are turbocharged, the air leaving the turbo is hot (as it is compressed) if it then passes through an after turbo heat exchanger (aftercooler) before entering the engine it cools down the air which becomes more dense and so more oxygen is available in the cylinder for combustion.
