Reducing Gas & Electricity costs

With the forecast big gas & electricity price hikes about to hit us, does anybody have any really innovative ideas as to how we can economise and save on fuel costs? Right now as a matter of principle I'm sitting here wearing my thick fleece, determined not to advance the central heating to click in before the timer kicks in at 6 p.m. !!

We're getting cavity wall insulation. More than likely to can get a grant, and after that is deducted it's not too expensive. We're getting both the walls and the roof done.

Would like to know if anyone has had it done and can confirm it does what it's supposed to do though...!

You can make real savings for example by making sure your house is very well insulated and double glazed. Fitting high efficiency boilers and modern timers, roomstats and radstats.

Keep a sensible temperature for only as long as you need it. Keep warm by doing more housework! Open up that disused fireplace and burn wood that is otherwise left to rot in the woods or by moving to a warmer climate or live in someone else's home, sleep three in a bed... sorry going off the subject now.

yes, we've already had this done shortly after moving into our house when it was new. It really does make a difference. We and our next door neighbour had identical life styles and compared notes. Our gas bill was much cheaper than hers. We also increased our loft insulation and boarded over most of it area which we're sure has also helped to keep the gas bill down.

We have a bungalow insulated to mostly modern standards, celcon blocks, cavity wall insulation and four inch loft insulation, should be a lot more plus double glazing. The oil heating uses about 1500 ltrs per year, not too bad but room for improvement.

we have a wood fire, and therefore only put the heating on if the forecast is below freezing. Brrr

Don't leave your tv/tv's on standby when you're not watching them. Only boil the amount of water you need in a kettle/pan. Only tumble dry stuff if you really need to. Defrost the freezer regularly.
