Painting with acrylics

I know I'll probably need turps/white spirit to wash brushes out with eventually, but while I'm painting can I just use water? Or should I use a different brush for different colours?

you dont need to use a different brush as acrylics are water soluable. you are welcome to if you wish but its not that necessary. im not sure that turps will work to wash out ingrained acrylic paint any way. try not yo get paint into the root of the brush and for it to dry there as it will eventually splay out the bristles. nail varnish remover works for removing ingrained acrylic in my experience, and then just rinse with water

Hi - I use acrylics all the time and I much prefer them to oils, no smell of turps throughout the house etc. I just use a brush with a jar of water, and if you want to water it down and do washes and things you can but you can also just use it as it comes all thick. The only thing is it does dry very quickly, you can get stuff to slow down that process. I use a piece of tinfoil over a plate for my palette and then just chuck that all away when I have finished, and if I want to change colours I just rinse out my brush in water or under the tap. When you have finished just rinse out and dry and you shouldn't need turps or anything.

to keep your paint wet on the pallet, use a sheet of blotting/watrecolour paper and wet it first and place on the pallet.

a good idea is also place the wet paper inside a wide flattish tupperware box, and keep the lid on.

if you let te acrylic dry on the brushes it will be very hard to get out - you will need to pick at it so keep the brush in water until you have completely finished
