From what I can remember the inspector checks for safety items such as fire blankets / extinguishers, fire exits, gas systems, electrical systems, fuel systems etc. It is mostly common sense things ie. not having the battery near fuel tanks or lines, electrical supplies to be fused etc. Of course the surveys change on a regular basis. The cost of these surveys ( which I think have to be done every 4 years ) varys a lot. Obviously things like the size of boat, amount of electrics, items that use gas affect the cost but also attitude seriously affects the the cost also. One of my boats was over 20 yrs old but because it was very basic, ie. hull + engine it didn't need a survey. Hope this helps a bit.
Your boat doesn't sound as if it's worth insuring for the costs involved, it's of very little value unless you have a very expensive outboard motor. The survey is usually done on the hull and general condition. A boat inspection for inland waterways use only is more comprehensive.
A boat has to have a survey every four years, do you mean a hull survey?

A survey is certainly a good idea on any boat. Mine cost 70 per metre and ended up saving me over 10K because I was able to negotiate on the results.

You might need a survey for insurance. He will check things like the hull for osmosis, the electrical system, the fuel system, not usually the engine unless you get a mechanical survey.

You don't usually have to have an inspection every 4 years. You may have to have a boat safety cert but the size of yours will not be big enough.

I have a good surveyors details if you would like, he works on the Thames mostly.
