Following a spate of broken windows & similar criminal damage problems in our area, can anybody please advise me exactly what is permissible regarding the installation of CCTV cameras on the outside of residential properties in an attempt to identify those responsible. . I'm concerned about the implications of Data Protection, personal privacy to innocent passers-by, etc. Any website references would also be very helpful. Thanks.

I don't see any problem your are allowed to protect your property within the confines of the law but if you are in doubt speak to your local police force they have officers there trained in the field you require

after all there is cctv cameras in the high streets everywhere

Yes it is allowed.. It will also be essential proof for any criminal damage and the police will have to take action once they have seen the footae.. It has worked on many housing estates where this is a huge problem.

footage not footae -( I am not a good typist)

Although CCTV can act as a deterent, it is seen by some as a challenge. Teenagers and kids wearing hoodies and balaclavas, unrecognisable in any useful form, playing up to the cameras. In a residential area it can cause more problems than it solves from the "youth" it is trying to protect you from.
One basic fact to bear in mind is that if someone is in a public place in full view of the rest of the world then any pictures or footage taken of them is "fair game".

It's certainly not illegal or an intrusion of their "human rights" (that phrase has such an awful reputation right now) to film them there : hence the "topless on the beach" type exposes of celebs.
Filming your own property and grounds isn't even worth questioning!
My neighbour installed CCTV on his house, but I asked him to ensure that the camera was not pointing to my property/garden giving him a view of it. e checked his monitors and he reset the camera angles to comply

just make sure they're high enough otherwise they could get damaged pretty easily and made pointless if someone was determined enough.

also there are a lot of pretty realistic dummy cctv cameras available these days if you just wanted a deterrent

CCTV is a lot more effective if the camera is invisible, or disguised as something quite different. Unless it's only as a deterent, then even fake ones will work.
Taken correct decision of choosing CCTV camera. It's nice option for security purpose and easy to install. CCTV can be install in homes too for security, and for home security you can also install video door phone camera. This will help to secure your home. The people having this system able to see and talk to the person who is outside their home premises without opening the door.
