I was notified that I had been long listed for a telephone interview. I was informed that the interview will be conducted on the 16th/17th of March, and that I will be contacted prior to these dates, to inform me of the time and date.

Waited for a call prior to the dates, recieved none, therefore requested for info from contact person listed on the letter, in her response, I was informed that there had been a change in dates and that I will be contacted shortly.

That was the last I heard from them. I was not called back for the interview, niether was I notified that it had been cancelled.

I am deeply upset, as I spent 3 days waiting for a call. What are my rights in a situation such as this? Should I contact them and ask for an explanation for such shoddy treatment?

Since they said that they would contact you prior to your interview, I am guessing that they will say you didn't need to wait in.

Personally, I would complain about their shoddy service, however it will obviously mean that your chances of ever getting ajob their are rather slim (don't know what size the company is).

Whilst I agree that it is not really on, sadly I don't think there is much you can do about it.

You don't have any 'rights' as such. They clearly aren't a very organised company & treated you poorly. It's entirely up you whether you complain or not but 3 things to consider:



  1. What do you hope to achieve by complaining?

  2. As Oneyedvic says, if you do complain, do you think you are likely to get the job

  3. If this is how they treat prospective employees, can you imagine what they would be like if you did work for them..?

If you're want to know what I would do - I would probably accept I'm not going to work for them & then put in a written complaint to the boss of the person who messed you about, just to get my own back a little bit.

Who was the interview with and for what purpose?
aren't phone interviews usually carried out by banks?

I would get in contact with someone as high up as I could and not the person named on the form and just act as though you are still waiting for your interview and ask what is happenening. This way you are not being rude but are highlighting the unprofessional treatment you have recieved from the named individual which will hopefully result in them getting a black mark against their name. Has the company got a web page? maybe you could find the name of someone higher up the food chain from that. This also makes it look like you have taken time to do some research about the company to someone higher. And you may find that the job hasn't been taken in which case it might stand you in a good position for it. Whether you would want to take it not of course is questionable. Companies do seem to like persistant people.

Ethel: Job is with public libraries, and the post was for customer services manager.

how long has it been? are you sure they won't still call? there could have been all kinds of problems in the company and they may have a huge backlog - and you did say 'long' listed, so they may be working their way through a long list that you are at the end of
