It can only show what's transmitted, a lot of stuff is still transmitted in the old format. Does it play wide screen dvd's ok?
My Mum has the same television and you have to change it everytime you change to sky i'm afraid.
If you have a widescreen TV set that to 16:9 and your digibox also in the Services menu > Picture Settings.

ditto above answer. You need to set up both the TV and the sky box to 16:9..

Or you can just set up the sky box to 16:9 and then the tv will change depending on the transmission.

also, some tv have automatic picture selection. Mine has, I just went into the settings and turned it off so now it stays at 16:9
sounds to me like you should try changing the settings on your sky box - go to services, picture settings.
Your Tv is working correctly. Unless the programme or film was recorded in 16:9, the correct viewing format is 4:3. Putting 4:3 material into 16:9 mode results in distorted, unnatural picture (most noticeably, everyone has fat heads!) . As others have said, you can adjust the sky settings, ideally it should automatically detect 16:9 or 4:3 and adjust the pic.
