hello I have some money to buy an iron so I would be very grateful if anybody could advise me which one to buy from the following

(a)a steam generator iron ------ I have no experience of these

(b)a steam press

I was going to buy a steam press but I read this article by a lady who bought a steam press and she ended up never wanting to get it out because it was so bulky and anyhow she was able to iron as quickly with the ordinary iron -----your comments would be very much appreciated ---thanks in advance

a steam press is wonderful for flat stuff like sheets etc. but can get complicated for things like shirts.

my beloved bought me a steam generator iron in the hope that it might make life easier ( i loathe ironing) and i have to say its one of the greatest things we ever got- cuts ironing time by at least a half nd real professional looking results - look for a real sharp looking elderly man omn platform 5 of crewe station at 7 in the morning and you'll see what i mean!! not a crease on him !

I'd settle for an ordinary steam iron as so many gadgets we buy are used a few times and then clog up much needed space. However, if you live in a hard water area, your steam iron could get clogged up with limescale very quickly. I just play safe and press articles with a damp cloth whenever it's really needed.
If you get a press get an Elna .... they are absolutely brilliant and a whole different way of ironing, I just leave mine out all the time.
We live in a very very very hard water area - our last kettle lasted less than a month before it needed descaling.

We (well I purchased but my wife uses) a Tefal steam generating iron 3 years ago - and it is fantastic. Cuts ironing time down amazingly (and my wife used to take in ironing to earn extra money so shes not slow).

Would highly recommend it.

We also keep it permanently out - it is rather heavy to move about.

hello thanks very much for all your answers.weighing the results from your answers I would come down in favour of the steam generating iron.I think it would be more versatile and you be able to iron curtains on the vertical. The trouble is steam press is very expensive And you have difficulty ironing things like shirts.thanks again
