Does anyone know what obtaining one of these entails in terms of content - I need to get one for offshore boating and wondered if I needed to revise before attending a course.

I should not bother with the RSGB site, it is for ham radio, not marine radio, instead have a look at the RYA (Royal Yachting Association)site.
It is no longer possible to take the VHF only course, you will instead have to take what is called the SRC (sort range certificate)which includes GMDMSS, you really ought to be looking for a local rya, or if you are lucky and have a local RNXS association you will find that they will have courses to suit you.
Oh and bye the way, you DO NOT need to have a B class licence in order to take an SRC course.
Here is a link to the site you need
