how do i shorten a bicycle chain ?

it's as simp,e as that but there is no linker to open it. what do i do drill out the pivets of the unwanted sectiion but how do i rejoin the chain ?

Chain repair kits can be purchased at appropriate stores... they have a snap together link repair that can replace the one you will remove. Be sure to check all the links closely since there may already be this type of link istalled. They look slightly different and are noticeably thicker on both sides... Like this:

just take your bike along to a bike shop my son had his done for a couple of quid only took a couple of mins

well being in italy bicycle maintanance is not that much considered u just chuck em when something goes wrong. i will inauire. the more modern biked don't have the linking peice like the old ones used to.

Sounds like you might have the derailleur type with a thin chain and no link? What you need is a small hand pin press which is made for the exact function, you just press out the pins and then remove a link and then press the pins back in again and yes they will stay in place as they are expanded on the ends and are a tight fit. Any good bike shop used to have these, the only problem is that good bike shops are few and far between these days.
