Be sure to check all the links closely since there may already be this type of link istalled. They look slightly different and are noticeably thicker on both sides... Like this:

Sounds like you might have the derailleur type with a thin chain and no link? What you need is a small hand pin press which is made for the exact function, you just press out the pins and then remove a link and then press the pins back in again and yes they will stay in place as they are expanded on the ends and are a tight fit. Any good bike shop used to have these, the only problem is that good bike shops are few and far between these days.
