Hi there , can anyone give advice about wether to do a locksmiths course.I have recently retired from the fire brigade and have good hands on skills at most things , I have got a course lined up but before I commit does anybody out there have any experience as a locksmith who knows how much money can be earned. Obviously it depends on the normal " the more you work the more money you earn " ( I know that much already!!) I am just interested in knowing if decent money can be earned either full time or part time self employed . I live in the staines middlesex area ; can any one advise please ,thanks very much.

You'd probably need to have some capital behind you, initially, because there would almost certainly be a period before you started getting much work.
Despite the presence of websites advertising such services, it's almost certain that the vast majority of people seeking a locksmith will turn to Yellow Pages. So you'll need to invest a reasonable sum in placing an advertisement with them and then wait for up to a year for the next edition to be published. Until sch time as you've got an ad in Yellow Pages, I doubt that you'd get very much work (unless, of course, you either open a shop or persuade someone to use your services on a sub-contract basis).
The Learn Direct site usually provides a reasonable guide to potential income. Their page on becoming a locksmith has this quote:
"Trainees can expect to earn around 10,000 rising to over 14,000 with experience and training.
A self-employed locksmith can earn in excess of 20,000 a year."

You are best to do a MLA (master locksmiths association) course, this will make you a recognized locksmith and then you can start you trade from there.

Despite popular beleif becoming a locksmith is not like having a license to print money but it CAN be very rewarding depending on your locksmith skills, customer skills and business management (if you choose to set up your own locksmith business). There is plenty of work out there for locksmiths because locks and keys are used by everybody everyday and if you have ever had to use a locksmith's services then you will know how expensive they can be
Well many people will tell you different things, one person will tell you he earns so much and another will tell you differently .
When you start out obviously you're not going to be earning top dollar straight away, starting out you might be unsure how much to charge, it might be helpful to ask other locksmiths how much they might charge for different jobs, different times the day call for different charges. The more experience you get in the trade then the more confident you will get about charging customers.Locks in locksmithing is the same ever you go in the country, i'd advise joining a locksmith forum, we're a friendly bunch and you will find that other locksmiths will always help you if you're Stuck.
