Can anyone explain to me why I would have to have a new Mobile number if I opted for a different price plan than the one I'm currently on with Vodafone. Yet if I were to go to another service provider I could take my number with me? As a result of this I have just had to pay for a handset (okay it was cheap - but that's not the point) that would have been free and on a cheaper price plan if I'd signed a new contract.

One of my work colleagues has just told me that her self-employed husband (who has his mobile number listed on his works vehicle) has found a way of getting around this. So, he stays with his service provider, ops periodically for new tarrifs and gets to keep his mobile number. Anyone know how he does this?

prob just demands it - there is nothing stopping vodaphone letting you keep your number they are just trying to get more money out of you, generally as their is so much competition in the market if you just tell them that you are leaving unless they let you keep the number they will do it for you... did you try demanding and threatening to go else where unless they did what you wanted? when i had a contract i generally got a discount etc from arguing a bit (still polite tho) they always have a margin to reduce the price or give you some special offer ... they always backed down with their "new customers" only offers etc
