strange characters when typing Word doc

When I type in one particular document (Word 2002) instead of normal letters I get those weird characters. How do I change it back to normal?! Thanks.

what's the font set to? should be times new roman or arial or something.

that's it, the font had somehow been set to 'Symbol'! Thanks.
