The "male" tenon fits into the "female" mortice.

The male is the bit that sticks out, the female is the bit that receives it !!! A common use of phrase that is used in engineering too.

Brings back memories of my woodwork days. Kempie is correct.

Unfortunately Shylocks answer wont help you allocate the correct name to the male and female parts once identified.
