Help - underwater filter
5 Answers
I am very new to keeping an aquarium! So new I only picked it up today (I am sure it was a rabbit my daughter wanted!) I bought a 'tank' kit which included a Fluval underwater filter plus 1. Set it all up but noticed the whole of the filter is supposed to be fitted under water and that there is no tube to hang outside the tank like a friends got. There is no adjustment on the filter and when i switched it on, the fish seem to be staying on the furthest side of the tank as if they cant swim against the flow of the the filter. Should I replace the filter with one I can adjust? Also there are no bubbles. The instructions are rather poor to be honest and dont really say how you can tell its working properly. Thank you.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.not all filters have a tube that hangs outside, i have a fluvel 3 and that hasn't and it should be fully submersed, you can change the flow on it by moving the outlet it should move to many positions and some have a + or - dial on, try pointing the flow nozel towards the back of tank if flow is still to strong so it hits the glass wall at back or nearest pane to ease the force,to get bubbles you need a air pump some tubing and a air stone, hope this helps, you could always go on to www.ukaquaristforums.co.uk for lots of info, its the one i use lots of info etc on there for all types of equipment and fish, cold, tropical and marine, whats your by the way as you should always cycle a tropical and marine before adding stock?
Well you dont always have to cycle a tank without fish, but it is advisable- the chances of your little ones surviving are slim I'm afraid.
Please please check out a dedicated forum, like the one coojy suggested as tropical fish keeping isn't as simple as you'd think. Believe me, I know as I'm new to the game myself. I naively presumed that you just needed to fill tank, dump fish in and voila!!! but oh noooooooooo!
I culdn't get coojy's link to work, just incase you can't either check out this this forum for more info, it'll be worth it in the long run.
Good luck!!!
