DVD greater than 4.7Gb?

I want to burn a film off my DVD recorder onto a DVD for my own, home use. The film is about three hours long, and the recorder tells me there is insufficient space on a standard 4.7Gb DVD-R disc when I try to burn it.
What options do I have? The recorder burns to just about any media you can think of

type dvd shrink into google then download the programme - version 3.5 - this will help, it also decrypts the security on any dvds you get from your mates or local hire shop. its free as well

Is this a stand alone dvd recorder hooked up to your tv?

If so, you recorded the film in the wrong mode - in future do not record in such high quality if you want to burn it to disc.

Unless you can record the film again in a different mode, you will have to divide the film into two parts and burn on to two discs.

I recorded the film off the TV - It was The Sound of Music which was shown last weekend on BBC.

I've got DVD Shrink on the PC already but I can't see what use it would be here as I can't put the film onto DVD to transfer it to the PC.

It is a stand alone DVD recorder hooked up to the TV along with the usual Sky box and VCR. The Toshiba RD-XS34SB has quality settings from 1.0 to 9.2 and I've always left it on the default setting of 4.6 since I bought it. Although 4.6 is not exactly high quality, I can see what you mean Ethel - I'll bring the figure down next time.

What about these dual layer discs that are available? Many films from rental shops seem to recorded on them. How good are they and what is their capacity and cost? Would it be worth trying to transfer the film to one of them?

Unless you can link your DVD recorder to your computer, you will have to find out if your Toshiba supoorts Dual Layer discs (I don't think it does) and most of them are of the + variety (which I don't think your Toshiba supports). Dropping the quality would defeat the purpose of DVD recording.

PS. Recording with Dual Layer discs is still a bit hit-and-miss, don't know if others have had more success?

dual layer discs have a capacity over 8Gb but ur recorder would have to be a dual layer recorder to use them--don't know about quality since although i have a dual layer recorder i have not tried the discs yet cos of cost--they are about �5 each--i am waiting for the cost to fall as i reckon they will as more people buy dual layer recorders

ajmmac - shop around, dual layer discs are now under �2. (Still a bit expensive if they fail though?)
